Robert H. Garner

Robert Garner is a partner in LP’s Corporate and Tax Planning Practice Groups. Rob concentrates his practice on all aspects of tax planning with respect to a wide variety of transactions. He works closely with private equity firms, real estate investors, strategists, and entrepreneurs on tax structuring related to acquisitions, dispositions, reorganizations, restructurings, recapitalizations and other tax matters.

In addition, Rob assists with a broad range of general corporate matters for clients, including business formation, review of mergers and acquisitions agreements, and contract negotiation. He also has extensive experience in conducting all aspects of federal/state tax due diligence on potential acquisition targets and in transactional tax modeling.

Rob joins the firm from Duff & Phelps, where he was a Vice President in the Transaction Advisory Services Group, and prior to that, he held positions with PwC and McDermott Will & Emery. His prior experience in both the consulting and accounting industries informs his pragmatic approach to solving clients’ toughest tax issues.

  • What was your first pet?
    Growing up I had a turtle, a red-eyed tree frog, fish, a dog (Freddy), and a cat (Arnold).

  • What’s your favorite vacation spot?
    Walloon Lake, Michigan in the summer, and anywhere with ski runs in the winter.

  • What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
    My grandfather always said “You can’t learn anything with your mouth open.” Listening to clients’ backgrounds and business stories is a fantastic source of continued education.

  • What was your very first job?
    As an animal lover, I wanted to be a veterinarian growing up. I worked at the local vet clinic after school.
