Robert Garner is an associate in the firm’s Corporate Practice Group. Robert concentrates his practice on federal income tax planning with respect to a wide variety of transactions.  He works closely with private equity managers, strategic investors, and entrepreneurs on tax consequences related to acquisitions, dispositions, reorganizations, and recapitalizations. In addition, Robert also has extensive experience in conducting all aspects of federal/state tax due diligence on potential acquisition targets and in modeling tax basis step-ups.

Robert joins the firm from Duff & Phelps, where he was Vice President, Transaction Advisory Services, and prior to that, he held positions with PwC and McDermott Will & Emery. He has a Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation from Northwestern University School of Law and a J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

Q&A

What was your first pet?
Growing up I had a turtle, a red-eyed tree frog, fish, a dog (Freddy), and a cat (Arnold).
What’s your favorite vacation spot?
Walloon Lake, Michigan in the summer, and anywhere with ski runs in the winter.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?
My grandfather always said “You can’t learn anything with your mouth open.” Listening to clients’ backgrounds and business stories is a fantastic source of continued education.
What was your very first job?
As an animal lover, I wanted to be a veterinarian growing up. I worked at the local vet clinic after school.
