CHICAGO, September 11, 2017 – Levenfeld Pearlstein, LLC (LP) congratulates Russell Shapiro, a partner in its Corporate & Securities Practice Group, for his recognition by Accounting Today magazine as being among the "100 Most Influential People in Accounting". The annual list profiles a wide range of figures who wield influence over the profession, from firm managing partners to state and federal regulators, thought leaders, academics, consultants and grassroots activists. The full list is available here.

"Any accounting firm leader involved with a merger over the last decade is likely familiar with Russell, who has been instrumental in structuring and negotiating many of the mergers among the industry's top 200 firms," said LP managing partner, Rob Romanoff. "We are proud to call him our partner and friend, and to celebrate this well-deserved recognition."

Among Shapiro's recent accounting firm M&A transactions:

  • Wipfli’s 2016 and 2017 acquisitions of Steinberg Advisors, Weltman Bernfield and Horwich Coleman;
  • Six different acquisitions by BDO with a combined value of more than $280 million. Most recently, this included the firm's 2016 merger with Feeley & Driscoll;
  • Carr Riggs & Ingram's 2017 acquisitions of Proctor Cook and Babush Neiman;
  • BDK's acquisitions of Wolf and Keisling; and
  • Marcum's 2015 and 2016 acquisitions of Frost Ruttenberg and Lautze & Lautze.

Shapiro has spent most of his legal career focused on professional services firm mergers and acquisitions. His understanding of the dynamics of CPA mergers, including the myriad partnership, tax, and finance issues inherent in such transactions, is matched by few. That skill, combined with his ability to pay incredible attention to detail throughout a transaction while remaining mindful of the big-picture business objectives of his client, has made him a sought-after advisor. Shapiro also advises on firm partnership agreements.

Shapiro is the former head of LP's Corporate & Securities Practice Group and today is a member of its Executive Committee. He earned his B.S. from University of Illinois and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
