CHICAGO Levenfeld Pearlstein LLC is pleased to announce that it has been invited to join the City of Chicago's Green Business Task Force, a Joint Committee recently founded to develop standards for levels of sustainability within Chicago’s corporate community. The Task Force is the result of a resolution introduced by First Ward Alderman Manuel Flores.
Co-Chaired by 39th Ward Alderman Margaret Laurino, 19th Ward Alderman Virginia Rugai and 14th Ward Alderman Edward Burke, the Green Business Task Force will assist businesses and public agencies in taking steps to prevent pollution and conserve resources. It will define the commonly used terms "sustainability" and "green" as they relate to Chicago businesses, to form a positive, proactive relationship between businesses and municipal government. This includes providing a forum in which businesses with diverse resources and varied impacts on the environment can collaborate. James Brusslan, head of Levenfeld Pearlstein’s Environmental Law Service Group, and Kimberly Lehtman, an associate in the Real Estate and Finance Practice Group, will serve as the firm’s Task Force representatives.
“We are honored to be working with the City of Chicago on this important Joint Committee, and look forward to a long and successful partnership with the City,” said Jeffrey C. Friedman, head of Levenfeld Pearlstein’s Green Development Initiative and a partner in the Real Estate & Finance Practice Group. “We have long prided ourselves on being ahead of the curve in supporting green development and environmental issues, and to be recognized by the City and asked to play a role in such a critical initiative is extremely gratifying.”
Levenfeld Pearlstein has long championed environmental initiatives. In April 2007, it became the first Chicago-based law firm to join the Chicago Climate Exchange, in which the firm committed to calculate and offset its carbon dioxide emissions. Levenfeld Pearlstein was also the first law firm in the United States to adopt the American Bar Association’s Model Sustainability Policy and Implementation Guidelines, and Mr. Brusslan is one of the only practicing Illinois attorneys to be accredited by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED AP. In addition, the firm has established an internal Environmental Task Force, headed by Mr. Friedman, which meets periodically to discuss and implement environmentally friendly firm policies and practices.
