The leaders of today’s law firms must embrace a new set of challenges when it comes to transgenerational issues in law firms. All law firms face transgenerational issues, and those that choose to ignore these tensions frequently falter or dissolve. Transgenerational tensions are at the root of many recent law firm dissolutions and the demise of some professional firms. Psychological and historical forces have molded entitlement into the structure of law firms. To move forward, firms must break the cycles of entitlement that have affected each generation. This piece is aimed at making firms aware of the origin of this tension. We can work toward a set of ideals that will permit us to build a framework to deal more effectively with transgenerational issues in our firms.
