Timothy M. Nitsch

Tim is an associate in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group and focuses his practice on patent and trademark prosecution. He has extensive experience in a variety of technology-related industries, including computer software, computer networking, automation systems, electrical circuits, mechanical systems and business methods. Tim works with individual inventors and small, midsized and large corporations.

Tim believes that intellectual property is one of the catalysts to successful product development. To that end, Tim works with each client to determine the overall goals of the client and to develop concrete strategies to help the client, and their product, succeed. This includes working with each client, and other professionals, to develop a business plan that is specifically tailored to the client’s goals with each product/invention and developing an intellectual property strategy based on the client’s needs. Tim also assists his clients in executing the development and growth of their product from conception through final production and sale.

Prior to his legal career, Tim was a building automation engineer who sold and implemented hundreds of customized temperature/process control systems and access control/video systems for large corporations and institutions. His previous clients included zoos, aquariums, major financial institutions, automobile manufactures, telecommunication companies, school districts, universities and hospitals. Tim also worked as a senior research engineer at a large network infrastructure manufacturer, where he developed electronics products for the building automation, telecom and network systems industries. He also assisted in drafting patent specifications and advised senior management on patent strategies.

Tim is named in a number of pending patent applications in the fields of building automation and structured network cabling systems. He also invented the “RS-485 Connector and Plug Housing” (U.S. Patent Number 7,294,026) and “Building Automation Controller” (U.S. Patent Number 7,734,572).

After becoming an attorney, Tim worked as a Patent Attorney for Sonnenschein, Nath and Rosenthal, now SNR Denton, where he drafted and prosecuted patent applications in the electrical, mechanical and software arts. Tim’s technical areas of focus include, LCD and OLED display technology, printed circuit board manufacturing, digital camera systems, signal processing, memory devices, wireless communications, cellular technologies, internet based software systems, optics, wireless power transmission systems, video analytical systems, Lithium-ion battery technology, packaging systems, telecommunication devices, medical devices, surgical devices, cogeneration systems, thermal conversion systems, fluid delivery systems and clothing. Tim has also assisted corporate counsel in determining risks and valuations of different technologies in numerous M & A transactions.
