Despite questions that still remain over issues such as the impact on civil unions and domestic partnerships, Stuart explains in the article that the benefits put same-sex couples on an equal playing field when it comes to powers of attorney, wills, 401(k)s, beneficiary designations, and many other tax and estate issues. "It will in a lot of ways simplify estate and tax planning for same-sex couples. They will no longer have to jump through hoops, or have nuance in documents," Kohn said. "In addition, they will not have to run to another state to get married for tax purposes."
